'Syrian rebels are armed by outside forces: report'

Two versions of the same story regarding the foreign arming of rebels in Syria were available on different web sites at least as late as 9 April 2012. Both stories were dated 8 March 2012. Copies of the stories with their original URL's are provided below.

The first is the shorter version available on the web site of Hurryiet Daily News, an English language news service in Turkey.

The second was available on the 'Syrian Youth Movement' web site (which describes itself as seeking regime change and democracy, and stamps its web pages 'Syrian Revolution Central') with the article stated as being sourced to Hurryiet. This is a longer more detailed version of the article.

It is possible (or probable) that this longer article was posted also to the Hurriyet site, perhaps early in the day on 8 March.

However, as the longer article contains information which is embarrassing to the Turkish government in the context of the Syrian civil war, it is also possible that the Hurriyet editors may have decided to replace it with a condensed version.

The stated  involvement of Turkey in the arming of the Syrian rebels, a claim reported as made by former CIA agent Robert Baer, does not feature in the condensed version. Nonetheless, even the URL for the shorter version has in its text the words "syrian-rebels-are-armed-by-outside-forces-including-turkey", which is the headline for the longer version available on the Syrian Youth Movement site.

The shorter version of the article still refers to the use of NATO bases in the region for the arming of the Syrian rebels, but without mentioning Turkey. It does mention Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Separate reporting has claimed that the NATO airbase near Iskenderum in Turkey has been used for such purposes.

Syrian rebels are armed by outside forces: report

ISTANBUL - Hürriyet

Syrian rebels are being armed by outside forces, according to reports and officials from Russia, Iran and Egypt.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister accused the U.S. government and Arab countries of arming the rebels a few days after talks with Russian officials. Egypt has also warned against an upcoming civil war if the flow of weapons from outside forces continues, echoing previous statements by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Several media outlets in the region have claimed that NATO bases are being used to train rebels.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia are reportedly supplying funding for the training.
